APRIL 4, 2009

RADIO CITY MUSIC HALLNYC

Forty years ago the Beatles, Donovan, the Beach Boys and Paul Horn traveled to India to study Transcendental Meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. They brought back meditation and music that changed the world.

Now for the first time in over 40 years, they are reuniting at Radio City Music Hall in New York for the concert "Change Begins Within" hosted by David Lynch, Laura Dern and Russell Simmons. Legendary musicians, Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Donovan, and Paul Horn will be joined by Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Moby, and Jim James to re-enliven these songs for a new generation.

On 20 March 2009 CBC News reported: Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will perform in public in the same event, for the first time in six years, at a special concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York on 4 April. The concert is a benefit for the David Lynch Foundation.

The renowned film director established the foundation to support school students learning Transcendental Meditation. It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring fulfilment to the field of culture.

A performance honouring the late George Harrison was the last time McCartney and Starr appeared in the same venue, in 2002 in London. Other special guests scheduled to appear at the 'Change Begins Within' concert on 4 April include Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Moby, Paul Horn, Bettye Lavette, and Jim James.

Global Good News comment: Hundreds of announcements about this historic concert have appeared in news media around the world. A representative sample includes: Reuters Associated Press

Oooommmm-ing along with Paul and Ringo
It's not often you get to see a middle school principal giddy, but San Francisco middle school Principal Jim Dierke was truly giddy.
"A Beatles reunion," he said. "I'm going to see a Beatles reunion."
Well, actually it will only be Paul and Ringo, but still, Dierke will be a special guest at a fundraiser for the David Lynch Foundation -- an organization that supports the teaching of transcendental meditation.

Dierke's school, Visitacion Valley Middle School, is among the schools, youth programs and other groups participating in the nationwide meditation program. Dierke's students, staff and teachers spend 15 minutes twice a day together sitting in silence, eyes closed.

Dierke has been a cheerleader for the program, attributing a decline in student behavior problems and improvement in academic achievement to the practice. Many of his students live in neighborhoods with significant community violence and other stress factors. The quiet time allows them to relax and focus, he has said.

Dierke, who was named national 2008 Middle School Principal of the Year, will be heading to New York's Radio City Music Hall on April 4 for facetime with the Beatles.

Sheryl Crow, Donovan, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Paul Horn, Moby, Bettye LaVette and Jim James are also headlining the sold-out show.

I'm so enthralled about this concert! And so encouraged about the prospect of 1 million kids learning meditation. This is so unbelievably progressive. And what a worthy cause. Meditation is among the best things to spend money on for our kids. Just look at the scientific research verifying TM's benefits and what doctors and researchers from medical schools are saying. www.DoctorsonTM.org . The NIH has so far spent $24 million researching TM's effects on brain function and cardiovascular health, and the science grants keep coming.

The Beatles learned Transcendental Meditation from Maharishi and, as many people know, went to Rishikesh, India to study with him in 1968. Maharishi was a great teacher of meditation. He stayed true to his purpose his whole life. And he structured a worldwide non-profit organization to bring the benefits of meditation to people everywhere.

I love this Website addressing the Beatles' “India experience” and clarifying what really happened between the Beatles and Maharishi. www.beatlesinindia.blogspot.com

Great to see the surviving Beatles getting back to really spreading the word about meditation.jpw108

Finally, something that is actually scientifically validated to truly improve the lives of our at risk kids from the inside out. Something structured into their school day that will help keep them healthy, happy and progressing.

Hats off to Principal Dierke. He stepped up and authorized a program that is untraditional but widely researched and which provides real value to the children of his school. I practice Transcendental Meditation and have also seen first hand how it benefits children and young adults by increasing their intelligence, maturity, creativity and personalities leading to better grades and success in their lives. Way to go Mr. Dierker!happyguy7

this is very cool - i can see why this principle won recognition - it takes real foresight and guts to implement such a plan - but thank goodness he cared enough to do this - what a great school! i wish i had teachers who were thoughtful enough to provide this when i was in school - what a blessing for these kids!
and thanks to the journalist for reporting on this!
fwiw, here is a link to details about the program (i didn't actually see it anywhere above):

One interesting observation here is the overall effect of a whole school meditating—it creates a peaceful atmosphere within and without the school building. That’s why the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace is committed to sponsoring the TM/Quiet Time program, to not only improve the academic achievement and individual happiness of each student, but to also collectively contribute to the overall peace of the whole neighborhood in which the school is located. Instead of being generators of fear and violence, schools can become creators of peace and happiness, while fulfilling their obligation to educate the youth of this country. And if enough students and schools practice TM collectively, the whole nation will benefit. Check out the David Lynch Foundation website, especially the videos:
